How to secure my home

There are many ways in which you can cheaply and effectively secure your home. From installing dummy alarm boxes to placing dog toys in your yard, these are just a couple of ways in which you can start.
Today, I am going to show you some of the cheaper of free ways in which you can stop burglars from being interested in your property.

Dummy Alarm Box

As I have already said, one of the best ways to help yourself, is to put up a dummy alarm box. THese are sometimes called fake alarm boxes, and you should be able to buy them online from reputable auction sites, or general online sellers for very little money.
The idea behind it is simple. Most burglaries are opportunistic. This means that a burglar will go into a house if he thinks there is a good chance that, a) nobody is home, b) there are no alarms.
Although a dummy alarm box will of course not make any noise, the average burglar will not know that it is not real. Even if they think it might be real, they are unlikely to be 100% confident and as a result they are more likely to move onto the next property.
Even if you do nothing else, a fake alarm box should be installed as an absolute minimum.
There are various other methods which can be used to also deter burglars.

Dog Toys

Sounds a little stupid, but dog toys left on a lawn are an obvious sign that a dog is in residence. Now a burglar, seeing the dog toys, will think two things. Firstly, will I get bitten ? and secondly, a dog is sure to bark, therefore alerting neighbours. Again , this will likely result in the burglar moving on to another property, and leaving you in peace.

Beware of the Dog Sign

This could be instead of, or as well as toys in the yard. Nothing deters a burglar like a picture of a snarling Rottweiler with some words such as 'beware of the dog'. He's not likely to try, and let's be honest, you'd have to be made wouldn't you ?

Lock Your Doors and Windows

Sounds pretty obvious doesn't it, but you would be surprised at the amount of burglaries that are made even easier by the fact that homeowners leave doors and windows unlocked or even open, when they are not at home. Even when you are at home, if you are in your back garden , then your front door should really be locked, and windows should be closed. The size of your house will have some bearing on this advice naturally, but try to imagine for a minute, if you were at the back of your house, would it be possible for someone to enter the front without you knowing ? Unless you live in a box, the answer is likely to be yes.
